Santa Ponsa - Hotel Rey Don Jaime
Santa Ponsa is very much a family resort situated in a horseshoe shaped bay on the south side of Majorca about 30 kilometres or so from Palma Airport.
There is a fabulous beach in the resort centre which is very family friendly with charming shops, cafes, restaurants and bars backing onto it. Sunbeds and Parasols are available for hire by the day. One tip though is not to buy from the fruit sellers who peddle their wares on the beach. The fruit will also have been sunbathing all day and it's cheaper to buy in the local supermarkets anyway.
Whilst the town beach is the main beach a couple of miles either side you will find some delightful coves with a stunning yachting marina backed by pine clad hills on one side.
There is also a small sandy cove (known locally as "Little Beach") on the route to Santa Ponca's marina (Club Nautico Santa Ponca). There are slightly fewer facilities here are less and its therefore less busy than the main beach, but its very popular with the local families especially on weekends when it can be rather crowded and noisy. The Little Beach is safe for children with its gentle shelving and also sheltered from the road by surrounding rocks, there is shade available from the Pine trees to enjoy a picnic. There are sunbeds available during the summer months and there is a children's playground just across the road.
Shopping
A great selection in the resort but mainly biased towards beachwear, sun tanning lotions, children's toys and the like. The best buys are leather goods, belts, shoes and handbags. Try bartering you may end up with a better bargain!
Bars and the night scene
At night time one thing is for sure, you will not be short of options if your favourite tipple is Guinness. There are a lot of Irish and Scottish bars to choose from and few more trendy bars which charge trendy prices. Families are welcome everywhere though.
Restaurants
Great variety to suit all tastes and pockets from local cuisine such as the ever popular paella to food from around the globe including Indian, Italian, Chinese and of course steak or chicken and chips. Rule of thumb applies, as everywhere, the furthest from the beach, the less expensive.
Neighbouring resorts include Magaluf and Paguera.

Getting there
The road from the airport is all motorway, so the journey, depending on the time of day, takes about 20-25 minutes and costs about 40 euro each way. One tip though, the taxi driver will want to take you via the ring road around Palma, this is fine and saves time getting to the hotel, but on the way back leave a little earlier and ask to be taken via the Paseo Maritimo. This is the seafront in Palma and the ride will take you past the cruise liner terminal, the yachting marina and the world famous Palma Cathedral, this is a more enjoyable and scenic route and a memorable way of bringing your holiday to a happy close.
Palma Airport
Palma airport is the same size as the city of Coventry and in the high season is Europe's busiest airport. On the way home take some advice...get there early. All flight check in's open up two hours beforehand, once you have checked in you will need to go upstairs to departures and go through security, a little bit of advice, there are two security control gates available, if you turn left or right you will come to security, so it is always worth looking at both, for some reason there are always more queues on the left than the right! There is a chemist, paper shops and some bars all before you go through security. There if also a very nice A la Carte restaurant that not a lot of people know about, so if you have time and fancy treat to end your holiday then pop into the Restaurant Son San Juan. Once you go through security you will be able to enjoy the normal benefits of the airport such as toilets, duty free shops, local goods, there are quite a few fast food restaurants there such as McDonald's if you have time to eat before you board etc, there are also some designated smoking areas. There are plenty of screens with flight updates situated throughout the airport, please be warned that the airport is very big and it make take you a while to get to your departure gate. If you require assistance at the airport make sure that you advise the check in staff upon arrival and they will do their best to help.
What are the dates of the big Fiesta in September?
The main festival in the resort is the September Fiesta, which marks the landing of James I and his subsequent conquering of the island from the Moors in September (10th) 1229. It is a 10-day long celebration - which entails a lot of eating and drinking. The culmination of the Fiesta is on the Saturday closest to 10th September each year with the parade from the cross at the Marina through the town to the main beach. It normally starts at 5.30pm and ends with a mock battle between the Moors and Christians on the main beach (the Christians always win!!!). At 9.30pm that night - until the early hours, there is normally a rock concert on the main beach. The Fiesta normally comes to an end with a firework display on the main beach, normally on the following day.
The Rey Don Jamie Hotel is in the perfect location to explore all that the surrounding area has to offer.
